Kava the Gorilla

Kava is a gorilla guard stationed in the village of Trion. When his colleague Neesa dies from malaria he angrily turns on Zoran, demanding answers as to why this 'human' disease has killed a gorilla. Soon Kava is also struck ill and the other gorillas run away from him in terror (in contrast to Kava cradling the dying Neesa). Urko refuses to allow Zoran to treat him with his experimental medicine, instead leaving him propped against a rock and guarded from a distance. Virdon, pitying the dying ape, sneaks up to him and gives him the quinine solution. By the next morning when Urko is about to burn the village, Kava has recovered enough to tell him that the cure works and the village should be spared.
